Laser Skin Resurfacing

What is Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Laser skin resurfacing is an advanced cosmetic procedure that uses laser technology to improve the appearance of your skin. This treatment works by removing layers of skin with precision, promoting collagen production, and revealing fresher, younger-looking skin underneath.

At Leila Med Spa, we offer both ablative and non-ablative laser resurfacing treatments. Ablative lasers remove the outer layers of skin for more dramatic results, while non-ablative lasers work beneath the surface without removing skin layers, offering more subtle improvements with less downtime.

How Laser Skin Resurfacing Works

During laser skin resurfacing, short, concentrated pulsating beams of light are directed at irregular skin, precisely removing skin layer by layer. This process stimulates the production of new collagen fibers, resulting in firmer, smoother skin as it heals.

Ablative lasers, such as CO2 and Erbium lasers, remove the outer layers of skin (epidermis) and heat the underlying skin (dermis) to stimulate collagen production. This type of treatment is more intensive and requires more downtime, but it can provide more dramatic results for concerns like deep wrinkles, scars, and significant sun damage.

Non-ablative lasers, on the other hand, work beneath the surface without removing skin layers. They heat the dermis to stimulate collagen production while leaving the epidermis intact. This results in less downtime but may require more treatments to achieve desired results.

Concerns Addressed

Fine Lines and Wrinkles

Laser skin resurfacing can effectively reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, particularly around the eyes, mouth, and forehead. By stimulating collagen production, it helps restore skin's elasticity and firmness.

Sun Damage and Age Spots

Years of sun exposure can lead to pigmentation irregularities and premature aging. Laser resurfacing can help reduce sun spots, age spots, and other forms of sun damage, revealing a more even skin tone.

Acne Scars and Other Scars

Laser resurfacing can significantly improve the appearance of acne scars and other types of scars by removing damaged skin and stimulating the growth of new, healthy skin cells.

Uneven Skin Tone and Texture

If you're dealing with rough skin texture, enlarged pores, or an uneven complexion, laser resurfacing can help create a smoother, more refined skin surface.

What to Expect

Before your treatment, you'll have a consultation with one of our expert practitioners to discuss your concerns and determine if laser skin resurfacing is right for you. We'll also provide pre-treatment instructions, which may include avoiding certain skincare products, medications, and sun exposure.

During the treatment, you'll wear protective eyewear to shield your eyes from the laser. A topical anesthetic may be applied to minimize discomfort. The laser handpiece will be moved across the treatment area, delivering precise pulses of light energy. The length of the procedure depends on the areas being treated and the type of laser used, but typically ranges from 30 minutes to 2 hours.

After ablative laser resurfacing, your skin will be raw, swollen, and may ooze or crust as it heals. This typically lasts 5-7 days for Erbium laser treatments and 10-14 days for CO2 laser treatments. Non-ablative laser treatments have minimal downtime, with some redness and swelling that typically resolves within a few days.

Results develop gradually as your skin heals and new collagen forms. Initial improvements can be seen once the skin heals, with continued improvement over the next 3-6 months. Depending on the type of laser used and your specific concerns, you may need multiple treatments to achieve optimal results.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is laser skin resurfacing painful?

We use topical anesthetics to minimize discomfort during the procedure. Ablative laser treatments may cause more discomfort than non-ablative treatments, but most clients find it very tolerable.

How long is the recovery period?

Recovery time depends on the type of laser used. Non-ablative lasers have minimal downtime (1-3 days), while ablative lasers require more recovery time (5-14 days).

How many treatments will I need?

This depends on the type of laser used and your specific concerns. Ablative laser treatments often provide significant results in just one session, while non-ablative treatments typically require 3-5 sessions.

How long do results last?

Results can last for years, especially with proper skin care and sun protection. However, the natural aging process will continue, and maintenance treatments may be recommended.
